Abstract
In the article, based on the analysis of literary sources and the author's own observations, it is concluded that the existing conceptions about the wave movements of the sedimentation basin as the primary cause of the rhythmic composition of sedimentary strata are erroneous. As such a cause, the intermittent nature of the uplift of the areas of sedimentary material removal is considered. The rhythmicity of the composition of sedimentary strata, in particular, coal-bearing strata, is considered as a key to the reconstruction of paleotectonic movements in the areas of sedimentary material removal.
